Arteta boost as Nketiah agrees new deal

Mikel Arteta (pictured) says Arsenal need to “continue to develop the great talent” that they have in Eddie Nketiah after confirming the striker has signed a new contract.

The 23-year-old (33/1 Premier League Top Goalscorer) initially joined the club when he was 14 but looked set to depart this summer, citing a lack of opportunities as his main reason for not signing fresh terms.

However, after starting the last eight games of the 2021/22 season, scoring on five occasions, he hinted that he had changed his mind and the Gunners (2/1 Top 4 Finish) announcing on Saturday that he has agreed a new long-term contract, with the exact length undisclosed.

With Alexandre Lacazatte recently confirming his return to Lyon and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang previously departing for Barcelona in January, Nketiah is now Arsenal’s first-choice striker.

While the club are still expected to head into the market for a new forward this summer, they have emphasised the importance with which they see the academy product by handing him the iconic number 14 shirt, most famously donned by Thierry Henry.

Arsenal begin their new Premier League campaign at Crystal Palace on Friday, August 5 (Match Betting – Crystal Palace 11/5, Draw 12/5, Arsenal 11/10) and Arteta will be eyeing a winning start to his side’s latest quest to return to the Champions League.

With Europa League football also on the agenda, the former England under-21 man is sure to see plenty of action and his manager has vowed to help him become an even more important part of his side.

“I’m delighted Eddie is staying with us,” Arteta said. “He represents what we are all about and all the values of the club.

“We are very happy that he has extended his contract and now we have to get to work and continue to develop the great talent and person that we have in him.”
