Betfred Super League Odds: Saints strengthen title claims

Betfred Super League winners and losers

St Helens (EVS Grand Final Outright) have pulled four points clear at the top of the Betfred Super League standings after beating Toulouse, while Wigan Warriors (4/1) returned to winning ways.

Saints earned revenge over the bottom side in the division after losing 22-20, albeit with a much-changed side, in March.

On a run of three successive victories, St Helens were always fancied to make it four in a row and further strengthen their grip on top spot after Catalans Dragons (10/3 Grand Final Outright) fell to a defeat against Huddersfield Giants (16/1) on Friday.

Morgan Knowles, Tommy Makinson and Konrad Hurrell all scored to cancel out Chris Hankinson’s early penalty to help Saints build a 14-2 lead at the break.

Toulouse responded early in the second half through Harrison Hansen to reduce the deficit but tries from Jack Welsby and Regan Grace put the table-toppers out of sight.

Hankinson did cut the gap late on but Kristian Woolf’s outfit held on to seal a 28-14 triumph at the Stade Ernest Wallon.

St Helens now hold a four-point advantage over Catalans and third-placed Wigan following the Warriors’ 32-12 win at Castleford Tigers earlier on Saturday.

Liam Marshall crossed twice for Wigan and set up another as they came from behind to get back on track after two successive Betfred Super League defeats.

Head Coach Matty Peet made four changes to his starting line-up after last weekend’s thrilling Challenge Cup win over Huddersfield and he felt his side coped well with the “disruption”.

He said: “I was pleased with the performance throughout, I knew there might be a bit of disruption organisation-wise with the changes.

“I thought in terms of effort and desire, you could see that we were here for the battle, which was always going to be the challenge.

“Once we got to half time and we knew that energy and physicality wasn’t going to be an issue, then we could talk about winning the game.”
