Craig's Betting Blog - 2YO Horse Racing Tips : Trainer Talk: Update on Karl Burkes 2yos 2022

Always a tough task narrowing down Karl Burke’s 2-year-olds to send to him. This year especially he looks to have a lovely crop. Here’s just a few and a few words by Karl.

1: BON MARINE 2020 Filly by Bungleinthejungle ex Marinebird.

The Nick Bradley owned filly is a half-sister to Yulong Minister who was trained by Archie Watson until 2018, speedy type who won on debut and wasn’t disgraced finishing seventh in the Windsor Castle at Ascot, won four times as a 2yo.

Karl’s view: “Looks a sharp early filly, typical of sire.”

2: UNNAMED 2020 Filly by Dandy Man ex Tilly Trotter.

The Ontoawinner owned filly was purchased for £35,000 at the Yearling Sales. Dam Tilly Trotter was a nice type for Dermot Weld in 2016, keen on debut but improved to win second time out at Dundalk. Plenty of speed in the pedigree.

Karl’s view: “Speedily bred filly, has gone through a growing phase so unlikely to be out until late may/June.”

3: BEYOND REPROACH 2020 Colt by Dandy Man ex Ultimate Best.

The Mr D J Mackay & Mrs E Burke owned colt was purchased at the October Yearling Sales 52,000 gns. Dam Ultimate Best only raced one season as a 3yo in low level races. Offspring include the George Baker trained May Remain who won six times in his career. A speedy type who did well as a 2-year-old finishing fifth in the Molecomb Stakes in 2017. A full-brother to the Karl Burke trained Tothenines who finished second last year on his debut to the well regarded Gubbass.

Karl’s view: “strong colt. Full brother is very useful and hopefully this fellow is the same.”

4: ALEXA’S PRINCESS 2020 Filly by Dandy Man ex Born To Spend.

The Nick Bradley Racing & Mrs E Burke owned filly was purchased for 42,000 gns at the October Yearling Sales. Dam won one race as a 3yo.

Karl’s view: “Scopey filly who moves well, looks sharp.”

5: DARK DESIRE 2020 Filly by Dark Angel ex Umniyah.

The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum owned filly was purchased for 260,000 gns at the October Yearling Sales. Dam Umniyah only raced once in her career. A half-sister to unraced Nawras trained by Marcus Tregoning.

Karl’s view: “Strong filly should be out April/May, looks sharp.”

6: ESPIONNE 2020 Filly by Dubawi ex Lunar Vega. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.

Karl’s view: “Lovely filly, will take time and be a summer onwards filly.”

7: DESIGN 2020 Colt by Expert Eye ex Betty Loch.

The Highclere BredRacing/Mother Teresa owned colt was purchased at the October Yearling Sales for 65,000 gns. First season sire Expert Eye is one I’m looking forward to and looks to have a good first crop to go to war with, check out Nancy Sexton’s post on the blog that gives an in-depth look at first season sires for 2022. A multiple group winner who finished his career winning the Breeders Cup Mile and now stands stud at Banstead Manor.

Karl’s view: “Well grown, scopes, will probably want 7 furlongs but may
start at 6.”

8: FARRHFROMGOTTON 2020 Colt by Farhh ex Formidable Kitt.

The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum owned colt was purchased for 125,000 gns at the October Yearling Sales. Dam Formidable Kitt won fto for Tom Dascombe who enjoyed a front running style.

Karl’s view “Lovely colt, will want 7 furlongs or a mile so.”

9: RAMZ 2020 Colt by Havana Gold ex Storybook.

The Sheikh Mohamad Saeed Al Shahi colt was purchased at the October Yearling Sales for 92,000 gns. Dam Storybook won her first two races as a 3-year-old in 2007 for Michael Jarvis.

Karl’s view: “Nice colt & moves well.”

10: EDMUND IRONSIDE 2020 Colt by Saxon Warrior ex Garden Row.

The Fine Claret Racing & More Turf colt was purchased for 82,000 gns at the October Yearling Sales.

Karl’s view: “Strong well grown, moves well. Will make a 2 year
old.”
