Dismal England crash to Oval defeat

England Cricket Odds: Buttler bids to maintain Morgan's momentum

England (3/1 World Cup 2023 outright) had a day to forget in their first ODI of the series against India as the tourists romped to an impressive 10-wicket victory at The Oval.

India (9/4 World Cup 2023 outright) won a decisive toss and decided to put England into bat. It was soon very clear why the tourists had passed up the opportunity to set the total as the Three Lions order struggled to cope with the pace and swing.

Only seven runs were scored from the top four batsmen in the England order, and all those runs came from Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow.

Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone were all dismissed without troubling the scorers.

Jos Buttler put up a stand of 30 runs before he became one of Mohammed Shami’s three victims of the day.

Moeen Ali (14) and David Willey (21) also contributed slightly more than their team-mates higher up the England batting order.

Ultimately it was Jasprit Bumrah who destroyed most of the England batsmen, finishing with impressive figures of 6-19 as the Three Lions set a dismal total of 110 to beat.

India made light work of chasing down that figure, with openers Rohit Sharma (76) and Shikhar Dhawan (31) getting the job done after just 18.4 overs.

Skipper Buttler was of course disappointed with the result at The Oval but feels his side will welcome the quick turnaround, with the second ODI of the series scheduled for Thursday at Lord’s.

“It’s a very tough day, we really came third in a two-horse race,” he said. “It’s tough to take but we’ve got to dust ourselves down for the game at Lord’s on Thursday.”
