Emery looking for something “different”

Unai Emery says Villarreal must show a different side to their game when they host Liverpool in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final (Match betting – Villarreal 18/5, Draw 31/10, Liverpool 8/11).

Villarreal (66/1 Champions League outright) were criticised for their negative approach when they travelled to Anfield last week, an approach that backfired as the Spanish outfit lost 2-0.

It’s all or nothing for the 2020-21 Europa League winners on Tuesday when they welcome Liverpool (10/11 Champions League outright) back to El Madrigal.

The Yellow Submarine have already seen off Juventus and Bayern Munich in the Champions League and they’ll need to dig deep to earn another shock win.

Emery admits Villarreal will need to remain strong defensively but has insists they need to “play a perfect game” offer more in the final third.

“Tomorrow we have to play a tremendous defensive game, brutal, different from Liverpool and, from there, to also be able to find something that we didn’t find there, which was our game,” Emery said.

“We need to play a perfect game. It is a difficult task, but we’re working on the game.

“We need to be excellent in our play. We need to do something no-one has done this year, beat Liverpool by over two goals.”

Despite facing an uphill battle, Villarreal defender Pau Torres believes they can force their way back into the tie.

The centre-back, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, feels playing on home soil could be a key factor.

Torres said: I think Villarreal is a better Villarreal than we were last week. We know what we need to do.

“We’ve seen a very strong Villarreal in our own stadium this season in very important games and we are aware of what we need to do.

“A tie is always 180 minutes and nothing is decided.”
