Golf Betting Odds: McIlroy ready for tough weekend

Scheffler lands first Green Jacket

Rory McIlroy (10/3 Outright) admits the conditions in Toronto are likely to make for a testing weekend as he looks to defend his title at the RBC Canadian Open.

The world number eight sits in a five-way tie for second at St George’s Golf & Country Club after scrambling to a second round of 68, which featured four birdies and two bogeys.

His six-under tally is matched by Matt Fitzpatrick (4/1 Outright) and the American trio of Alex Smalley, Keith Mitchell and Jim Knous.

However, it is Wyndham Clark (14/1 Outright) who leads by a shot heading into the weekend after backing up his opening 63 with a Friday 70.

Clark himself said he “played great” on Friday but struggled in the wind and it is again expected to be breezy in Ontario on both Saturday and Sunday.

With the leader still to break his PGA Tour duck, he is sure to feel the pressure from those behind and McIlroy looks the most likely to lead the pack.

The Northern Irishman won this tournament the last time it was played in 2019, striding to a seven-stroke success at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

Speaking after his round on Friday, the 33-year-old compared the conditions to a major, adding that the length of rough and the testing greens means it could be a case of survival of the fittest over the weekend.

“Challenging,” McIlroy said. “I think the only thing this golf course needs for it to feel a little more major like is just a bit of length. I think that’s the only thing that’s missing.

“The rough is very penal, the greens are tricky, the wind’s up, it’s drying out a little bit because of the wind. All of a sudden you’ve got a pretty testing golf course.”

Elsewhere and Charl Schwartzel (1/2 Outright) is the man in charge at the LIV Golf in London.

The South African heads into the final day three clear of compatriot Hennie Du Plessis (7/2 Outright) at St Albans’ Centurion GC, with American Peter Uihlein (12/1) five back on four-under.
