Miami Open Betting Odds: Medvedev makes his move

Daniil Medvedev

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev is now just two wins away from regaining the men’s world number one spot thanks to his victory over Pedro Martinez at the Miami Open (Medvedev 15/8 to win the tournament – outright).

The US Open champion reached the last 16 of the tournament after a 6-3 6-4 success on Tuesday. He dropped only four points on serve in the first set as he showcased his superior skills.

Medvedev only held the No.1 spot for a brief period, but with Novak Djokovic not playing in Miami, he can return to the top of the world rankings if he reaches the semi-finals.

Medvedev will play Jenson Brooksby in the last 16, and he says he took plenty from his clash with Martinez.

He told reporters: “I think in general I played not so bad; they are really slow courts here, so playing against a Spaniard is not easy.

“I felt like we had a lot of rallies where he was bringing the pace down in the point, and I couldn’t do much.

“I tried to serve well, keep consistent and make less errors in the most important points.”

In the women’s draw, Naomi Osaka (9/4 to win the tournament – outright) reached the quarter-finals after she beat Alison Riske.

Osaka spent just 92 minutes on the court before recording a 6-3 6-4 success. She will now face American Danielle Collins, who beat Ons Jabeur 6-2 6-4.

British number one Cameron Norrie will do battle with sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway in the last 16 on Tuesday (Ruud 8/13, Norrie 5/4 – match result).

Norrie overcame a late wobble in the third round against Hugo Gaston, and he will be doing all he can to advance in Miami as he prepares to break into the world’s top 10 for the first time next week.
