Pivac calls for mental strength from Wales

Wayne Pivac

Wayne Pivac has stressed the importance of being mentally resilient as Wales (18/1 World Cup 2023 Outright) prepare for a three-Test series against South Africa (11/2).

Wales have travelled to South Africa to play the world champions in three fixtures in July with the first meeting set to take place in Pretoria on Saturday (Match Betting – South Africa 1/12, Tie 33/1, Wales 9/1).

Engagements in Bloemfontein (July 9) and Cape Town (July 16) follow on as Wales look to try and get back on track after a torrid Six Nations campaign.

They were last seen losing 22-21 to Italy following on from successive defeats at the hands of France and England, while they managed to win just once – beating Scotland – during the 2022 Six Nations.

With that in mind, a trip to South Africa (10/11 -19 Handicap) looks like an extremely tough assignment for Pivac’s men and history certainly isn’t on their side.

Wales have lost each of the 10 previous Tests in South Africa and Pivac has challenged his squad to “be strong mentally”.

Pivac said: “From a mental point of view as well, where we apply ourselves, and we’ve got to be strong mentally to go to South Africa over three Test matches. We need to make sure that we give ourselves every opportunity.

“It is not just a physical game we’ve got to be able to counter, but it is also a mental game as well. We need to make sure we are up to that challenge. History says we that haven’t done well there (in South Africa), clearly.

“We will be doing what we think we need to do to try to win the first Test, and then set ourselves up for a great series.”
