US Open champion Emma Raducanu (25/1 US Open outright) has booked her spot in the second round of the Washington Open.
After earning a statement victory at the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has struggled for form, with injuries preventing her from kicking on.
However, a return to the hard courts in the US could spell a move in the right direction, and she looked at home in her first-round tie in Washington.
Raducanu eased to a 6-4 6-2 victory over American qualifier Louisa Chirico in just 87 minutes to set up a second-round match with Camila Osorio (Match betting – Camila Osorio 9/4, Emma Raducanu 1/3).
With the US set to get underway on August 29th, Raducanu only has a handful of competitions to build momentum but admitted it felt good to be back.

“It definitely feels really good to get a win here in D.C.,” Raducanu said.
“After not playing for quite a bit after Wimbledon or many matches at all this year, I think it’s a really nice feeling just to get on the board.
“I think playing any first round is always pretty challenging. Then when you’re not necessarily that match-sharp, small things you don’t necessarily get right. It’s just important to stay calm.”
Elsewhere, Dan Evans (20/1 Washington Open outright) is through to the third round courtesy of a 6-1 6-2 triumph over compatriot Kyle Edmund.
Evans, who reached round four at the 2021 US Open, will take on America’s Taylor Fritz or Australian Alexei Popyrin next.
“My focus was very good,” said Evans.
“It’s always nice to start a new swing off with a win, and it’s nice to be through to the third round.”
