Rohit expecting strong India response

India captain Rohit Sharma says his side are aiming to respond to their disappointing fifth Test defeat to England in the three-match T20 series, starting at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday evening (England 8/13, India 5/4 – Match Winner).

After the fifth Test from last summer’s series was postponed, it was finally rescheduled for last week and the tourists looked to be in a strong position to wrap up a 3-1 series win when setting England a target of 378.

However, the red-ball team has been rejuvenated by Ben Stokes’ captaincy and Brendan McCullum’s appointment as head coach and they roared back to claim the spoils in style.

Unbeaten centuries from both Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow saw England achieve their highest-ever Test run chase with India’s bowling attack garnering criticism for their lack of firepower.

Now, a different XI will take part in the first of a three-match T20 series (England 8/11, India 11/10 – Series Betting) as they try to get the better of England, who will have new captain Jos Buttler in charge for the first time.

Rohit was absent from the Test defeat due to illness but he will return to the side to open the batting for India in this T20 series.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s match, the 35-year-old believes there won’t be any hangover from Edgbaston.

“It’s disappointing not to come out on the winning side but clearly it’s a different format. Time will tell whether that has impacted this format,” he said.

“But the guys who won the Test match at Edgbaston are not here. It’s a different side for both teams.

“Whenever there is a tussle between England and India, it’s always a very highly watched contest and great fight between bat and ball. We’re not expecting anything different.”
