Sea La Rosa claims Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes

Connections of Sea La Rosa were able to celebrate another fine success as Williams Haggas’ charge secured victory in the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday.

The four-year-old secured the sixth win of her career thanks to a superb ride from jockey Tom Marquand pictured).

Marquand and the rest of the jockeys had to change their gameplan when Urban Artist flew out of the blocks on Saturday afternoon.

The seven-year-old was a dozen lengths clear when turning for home, but Sea La Rosa got in front just before the finishing post to claim a famous victory.

Marquand has admitted he was worried at times, but he was delighted to be able to give Haggas and his team another winner at Goodwood.

He told reporters: “It was a tough one because we know Urban Artist stays very well, and yet you never know quite how much a horse in front has left.

“This filly gives you great confidence on the way round because she travels so strongly, and you know she is going to grit it out. It was just a case of trying to pick her up at the right time yet not run her off her legs.”

Saturday’s opening race at Goodwood went to Andrew Balding’s The Foxes, with odds-on favourite Classic having to settle for second.

Richard Hannon’s runner was expected to cruise home at 4/5, but The Foxes, who was available at 5/1, finished strongly to win by a neck.

The Coral Stewards’ Sprint Handicap went to Many A Star, to give Marquand his first winner of the day.

John & Thady Gosden also claimed another winner, with Trawlerman victorious in the Coral Summer Handicap at 6/1. Trawlerman managed to avoid the traffic issues and get up to beat Bague D’Or and Euchen Glen.

The biggest surprise of the day came in the Coral Stewards’ Cup, where Michael Dods’ Commanche Falls landed the spoils over six furlongs at odds of 25/1.

The Medallia Handicap went to I’m A Gambler at 18/1, while Kim Bailey’s Ajero was the final winner of the 2022 Glorious Goodwood Festival, as he won the Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Handicap.
