Spain looking to put down marker

England expected to fare strongly

Title contenders Spain (7/2 – Euro 2022 outright) will be looking to hit the ground running at Euro 2022 when they face Finland in their tournament opener on Friday evening.

Spain head to Stadium MK looking to put down an early marker in a tough Group B which also includes the likes of Germany and Denmark (Spain 1/12, Draw 17/2, Finland 20/1 – Match Result).

It has been far from ideal preparations for Spain leading into the major tournament, with record topscorer Jenni Hermoso suffering a knee injury last month, before current Ballon d’Or holder Alexia Putellas suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury on Tuesday in training.

As for Finland, they were unbeaten in qualifying on their way to topping their group but have since collected just one win in their last eight outings.

Much will rest on the shoulders of record goalscorer Linda Sallstrom for the underdogs, as they look to spring the first big shock of the European Championships.

Friday’s other game from the Euros comes from the Brentford Community Stadium as neighbours Germany and Denmark go head to head (Germany 8/15, Draw 3/1, Denmark 9/2 – Match Result).

Germany are the seven-time champions and are 15/2 to win an eighth title, while Denmark are 33/1 shots for the trophy.

As one of the contenders for the title, goalkeeper Merle Frohms believes Germany will have to live up to the expectations that surround them.

“We are, without a doubt, under pressure because we are the favourites and that’s also where we want to be,” Frohms said.

“But the pressure is not something new for us because we feel it in every game that we play. Therefore, this is not a new situation and we are more than prepared to deal with it.”
