Today's Horse Racing Odds: Friday 13th May

There are just two meetings going ahead in the UK and Ireland on Tuesday at Musselburgh and Ballinrobe with the planned action at Chelmsford, Southwell and Wolverhampton abandoned due to the heatwave affecting large parts of the country.

After the Met Office issued a ‘Red’ extreme heat warning, Monday’s meetings at Beverley and Windsor were cancelled and the BHA also took the decision to call off today’s racing at the three English courses as they all fell “either within the warning area or are situated nearby”.

When explaining their decision on Friday, the BHA said in a statement: “With a view to the wellbeing of human and equine participants, as well as owners, staff and customers, a decision has been taken that the fixtures should not go ahead as scheduled.”

Racing goes ahead as planned in Scotland at Musselburgh, though, where temperatures are forecast to peak at around 30C, and the first contest is due off at 13:50 with the seventh and final race set for 17:15.

In the fourth race at Musselburgh at 15:35, Betfred are paying out on three places as part of their ‘Extra Place’ promotion. Bellevue Lad (4/1) stands out amongst the seven runners as he’s won over this C&D before, although that victory last August is his only one in 12 starts. He was also a respectable fifth of 10 in a handicap at Catterick a couple of weeks ago.

In the final race at Musselburgh at 17:15, City Wanderer (9/4) is hoping to follow up after gaining a first win since 2019 last time out in an eight-strong handicap over this C&D 20 days ago. Genever Dragon (2/1) is another contender after he recorded a good third-place finish among 11 at Ripon last month.

In Ireland, the meeting at Ballinrobe takes place between 16:30 and 20:00 and there are eight races with the third at 17:30 part of Betfred’s ‘Extra Place’ promotion, where they are paying out on five places in this 17-strong field.

Tullypole Annie (4/1) was a C&D winner in May and was fourth out of 14 in a handicap hurdle at Kilbeggan last time out so should feature prominently.
