Manchester United have been knocked out of the Champions League after defeat to Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The Spanish champions won 1-0 on the night to make it 2-1 on aggregate, booking their ticket to the quarter-finals of the competition.
It was an evening of frustration for United, who were the better, more expansive team on the night – but that counts for nothing, as ultimately their Champions League journey has come to an end.
Ralf Rangnick’s side had their fair share of chances – Elanga hitting Jan Oblak in the face from close range, a penalty shout (albeit a weak one), a cracking effort from Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane being denied from a close-range header – but it was Renan Lodi’s back-post header, just before the break, that was the decider on the night.
A bit of a smash and grab, it’s fair to say, but that’s exactly what this Atletico side are experts at.
Diego Simeone’s side have been cut from 40/1 to 16/1 to win the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Portuguese side Benfica, who were a three-figure price to win the competition at the start of the night, beat the odds to knock out the well-fancied Ajax.
It was a similar story in Amsterdam, as Ajax were much the better team but put failed to put away their several chances.
A 77th minute goal from Darwin Nunez was the decider, and Benfica are into the last eight of the competition.
They have been slashed into 66/1 to win the Champions League, although they remain rank outsiders.
