Warrington primed for “crucial” game

Warrington head coach Daryl Powell

Warrington Wolves head coach Daryl Powell admits Saturday’s clash with Castleford Tigers is “crucial” if they want to mount a push for a top-six spot in the Betfred Super League (Match Betting – Castleford 4/5, Tie 20/1, Warrington 11/10).

Wire sit ninth and four points adrift of fifth-placed Castleford ahead of Saturday’s 15:00 clash at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

A morale-boosting 36-10 over Catalans Dragons at Magic Weekend has reignited Warrington’s hopes of securing a playoff berth, however, that triumph will matter little if they don’t go on to build some winning momentum.

Castleford enter Saturday’s clash on the back of a 34-20 loss to Leeds Rhinos and are likely to be eager to show a response back on home soil.

Warrington did claim a 34-10 victory in the reverse fixture in February and Powell is hoping for a repeat performance.

Powell, who was head coach at Cas between 2013 and 2021, said: “It is a four-pointer with Cas. You lose and you’re six points away from them. You win it’s two. It is important. It’s crucial for us, a pivotal game. We want to step up and get in the six – and Cas are one of those in there at the moment.”

Saturday’s other fixture kicks off at 19:00 when rock-bottom Toulouse will look to further strengthen their claims of beating relegation against an improving Leeds (Match Betting – Toulouse 11/8, Tie 20/1, Leeds 4/6).

Toulouse looked dead-and-buried just a matter of weeks ago, but successive wins over Hull KR and Wakefield have moved them just two points shy of safety.

Leeds have looked a much stronger outfit since the appointment of head coach Rohan Smith and, having also sealed back-to0back wins, they are now just three points adrift of the top six.
