Wimbledon Betting Odds: An upset on the cards?

New feature .... our columnists are on the case

If we feel there’s something of note happening during the day – ‘we’ being the Betfred columnists at HQ – then henceforth we’ll be flagging it up accordingly.

Reckon you can never have enough opinions and advice from which to make sound judgements of your own, so we’ll be chipping in on a fairly regular basis in a bid to add to the fun for us, and far more importantly, you.

My colleague Owen’s strong fancy at Wolverhampton yesterday flew in, meaning the pressure is back on me to deliver!

Today, my attention is back on the tennis and more specifically, the men’s quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal takes on Taylor Fritz on Centre Court, and of course, the Spaniard is the favourite. However, my tip would be to back the American, Fritz.

Now, before you label me insane, here’s my thinking. We nearly saw Jannik Sinner cause a major upset against Novak Djokovic yesterday, and Nadal hasn’t looked his best so far in this tournament but he’s grinded out results – the true mark of a champion. He’s essentially playing on one foot, and we mustn’t forget that, but he’s looked so unlike his normal self.

He dropped the third set against Francisco Cerundolo and Ricardas Berankis, he gave back a break lead in the third set against Lorenzo Sonego and he was broken serving for the match against Botic van de Zandschulp.

But Fritz has looked exceptional, especially in his previous round match against Jason Kubler, and he’s yet to drop a set.

The American is 2/1 which I think has plenty of value, and in my opinion, Fritz is more than capable of causing an upset here. He possesses a big topspin forehand, and a huge serve – he’s only been broken five times in four matches.

In fact, Fritz beat Nadal when they last met in the final of Indian Wells earlier this year.

Nadal’s experience may prove to be too much, but Fritz will be confident coming into this one.
