Woolf hoping wake-up call works

St Helens (11/10 Grand Final Winner) boss Kristian Woolf says he hopes his side’s 44-12 defeat to Salford Red Devils on Sunday provides his team with a wake-up call as they try to win a fourth successive Grand Final.

The Red Devils moved into the playoff spots after a superb eight-try performance on home soil at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Paul Rowley’s side raced into an early lead and never looked back as they led 26-0 at the break after tries from Sitaleki Akauola, Joe Burgess, Dan Sarginson and Kallum Watkins.

Burgess and Watkins then grabbed their second of the afternoon on Sunday before Greg Burke and Brodie Croft also crossed over the line as St Helens struggled to keep the home side at bay.

Jack Welsby and Alex Walmsley scored nothing but consolation tries in the end, and Woolf says his team need to learn their lessons if they want to finish the season as League Leaders’ Shield winners.

Woolf told Total RL: “Salford deserve credit. They played very well, but we are extremely disappointed.

“We pride ourselves on high standards and, for whatever reason, we have not reached those today. We pride ourselves on defence, but we were well below our usual standards. We are going to have to have a good look at that and try and work out how we can turn around.

“If you don’t start the game with the right attitude, things can snowball, and they become hard to turn around.

“Salford played exactly the way we expected to play, and they executed well. We are the ones who needed to be better. We were off in every department, and that showed really early.

“That result needs to give us a kick up the backside, and we need to have an honest look at ourselves. We have been off for two weeks, and I’m not sure why we have been.”

St Helens remain at the top of the Super League table, but their advantage is now only four points, with rivals Wigan Warriors (3/1 Grand Final Winner) having closed the gap following their 46-4 win over Hull KR last Thursday.
